Athletics Director Emeritus, Notre Dame

Jack Swarbrick served as the Vice President and Director of Athletics at the University of Notre Dame from 2008 to 2024. During his tenure at Notre Dame, the university’s student-athletes led the nation in graduation success in 14 of the 16 years while also winning 10 team national championships and qualifying for the college football postseason (BCS or CFP) on three occasions. In the rapidly changing college athletics landscape Swarbrick was able to ensure Notre Dame’s continued football independence by twice extending the university’s relationship with NBC Sports and securing membership in the ACC for all Olympic sports except hockey (which competes in the B1G). Beyond his work at Notre Dame, Swarbrick was a member of the College Football Playoff Management Committee that helped create the new 12-team model.

Among Swarbrick’s most impactful initiatives during his tenure at Notre Dame was the development of athletic facilities that focused on serving the broader community while also providing industry-leading venues for student-athletes. The most notable among these was the Campus Crossroads Project, which transformed the iconic Notre Dame Stadium into a dynamic academic, student activity, and athletic hub. Early in his time at Notre Dame, Swarbrick anticipated the growing importance of digital programming generated by athletic departments and launched Fighting Irish Media (“FIM”). In addition to producing award-winning digital content telling the stories of Notre Dame student-athletes, the industry-leading FIM has grown to produce live athletic events for national broadcast (including football games) and the documentary Here Come the Irish for Peacock—a series that told the story of the 2024 Notre Dame football team.

Swarbrick’s commitment to social justice led to the creation of the STAND TOGETHER/Together Irish movement, which earned Notre Dame the NCAA’s Award for Diversity and Inclusion in 2024.

Swarbrick is a 1976 magna cum laude graduate of Notre Dame, with a bachelor’s degree in economics. Upon graduating from Stanford University Law School in 1980, he accepted a position as an associate in the Indianapolis law firm Baker & Daniels (now Faegre Drinker). He was made partner in 1987.
